Small towns…

This has been on my mind a lot lately…

I grew up in a relatively small town, Hartwell, GA. I always thought that most people who stayed in Hartwell after high school really had nothing going for themselves {except for people like teachers, preachers, nurses, doctors…people like that}. I mean, there weren’t {aren’t?} a lot of opportunities here for someone who had big dreams, per se, and I just didn’t have a clue why anybody would want to live here.

Fast forward some years, and I currently live here. At the ripe old age of 24. And it’s actually not all that bad. I used to sometimes think I might live here when I was older {The thought was probably for a split second}, but I definitely never thought I’d be happy, and dare I say, successful being here.

{Let me stop right here and say success means different things to different people. So, to some, I may not be successful because I live in Hartwell, and I don’t make loads of money. That’s not what it means to me…but I digress…back to the post at hand…}

I now realize that just because you go back and live in your small hometown doesn’t make you a loser or bum or whatever. With fabulous inventions like the Internet, I don’t have to move to Atlanta or New York City to be a successful freelance copywriter & blogger. I can stay right here {if I want}, live cheaply and make a living— all at the same time{Gasp! Surprising, isn’t it?}. And just because you live in a bigger city doesn’t mean you’ll be successful. I mean, if you really think that that’s the only way to reach you goals, then maybe you need to sit down and re-evaluate things…{I’m just sayin’}. On the other hand, if there’s a certain field you’re pursuing {i.e., entertainment, fashion public relations}, then yeah, you probably should move to a bigger city. And I won’t lie, I would like to be in an area with more networking, conferences and culture, but hey, I have transportation, so I can just drive…

I feel like I’m rambling, so these are my points:

1) You don’t have to move to a huge city to be successful {And don’t let anyone try to tell you otherwise; success comes from you and you only.}

2) You shouldn’t think that anyone’s life sucks because of where they live— especially when you really know nothing about what’s going on in their lives.

3) Don’t act like you’re God’s gift to [insert your small town here] when you visit just because you moved away, and don’t badmouth the area and people there. If your life was so great where you are, would you really feel the need to do that?

And I’m done…*rant over*

Thoughts anyone?
